Serving as the grand entrance to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, the Grand Army Plaza sits atop the original site of the Battle of Long Island which was the first major battle that took place during the American Revolutionary War. Currently, the plaza stands amid the largest and busiest traffic circle in Brooklyn, making it a prime location in the Upland metaverse.

Grand Army Plaza, located at the Park's southeast corner, consists of two symmetrical plazas bisected by 59th Street. On the southern side stands the Pulitzer Fountain and on the northern side is the gilded monument to Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. The site marks a major entrance to the Park and also provides seating and open space in a busy part of Midtown.

Fun Facts about Grand Army Plaza

• Park designers Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted originally planned for the entrance to be lined with trees and actually rejected the idea of a grand park entrance marked by monuments.
• A multitude of additions to the plaza has been made over the years. The first of which was a monument to Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1903, which was designed by renowned American artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
• In 1916, architect Thomas Hastings and sculptor Karl Bitter completely redesigned the area to mimic European urban design and create the two plazas that exist today. The project itself was actually funded by the estate of Joseph Pulitzer after his passing.
